U.S. Route 701 is a spur of U.S. Route 1, although the two routes never intersect. However, using U.S. Route 301 or U.S. Route 501 would connect to U.S. Route 1. It runs 172 miles (277 km) from Four Oaks, North Carolina at U.S. Route 301 to Georgetown, South Carolina at U.S. Route 17. It passes through the states of North Carolina and South Carolina. U.S. 701 bypass routes are found in each of the following cities: Clinton, NC, Clarkton, NC, and Whiteville, NC.

Route description

South Carolina

US 701 begins at the intersection of US 17, the northern terminus of ALT US 17 and southern terminus of U.S. Route 521. The road intersects with SC 51 in Kensington, SC 261 in Yauhannah, US 378 & US 501 in Conway, SC 319 in Homewood, SC 22 and SC 410 in Adrian, SC 9 in Loris, and SC 410 again before entering Tabor City, North Carolina.

North Carolina

As US 701 enters Tabor City from South Carolina, the road immediately intersects NC 904. North of there, NC 410 branches off from where SC 410 ended. North of a short overlap with NC 130, the road runs beneath an interchange with US 74 – US 76 in Whiteville. In Clarkton, US 701 crosses NC Highway 211 and a CSX railroad line leading to Wilmington. After the intersections with NC 87 and later NC 41 the road enters Bladen Lakes State Forest.

The road joins U.S. Route 421 and both become the Faircloth Freeway, a limited-access highway with an interchange with NC 24 around Clinton. After the overlap ends, the limited-access portion remains until the last interchange with BUS US 701. After Monks Corner, US 701 crosses over I-40 at Exit 343 and then intersects US 13 and NC 50-55 in Newton Grove. In Four Oaks, NC 96 overlaps US 701 as it crosses over I-95 at Exit 90 and finally ends at US 301, while NC 96 moves northeast along US 301 until breaking away in Selma.
